George Hannon Junior Invitational Returns to UT Golf Club
August 10th 2018 - DALLAS — The George Hannon Junior Invitational is set to cap off another great LJT summer when the 36-hole event returns to University of Texas Golf Club for the first time since 2013.

The field will take on UT Golf Club’s par-71 layout on August 13-14 which was built in Texas Hill Country and overlooks Lake Austin. The course borders the Balcones Natural Wildlife Preserve and can stretch out to 7,412 yards.

The Hannon Cup Society created the event in 2009. Since then the LJT has conducted the prominent invitational. It brings together the top 99 boys and girls in the state, either through invitation or based off the current year’s Player of the Year Points List standings. Three divisions compete separately: Boys 15-18, Boys 14 & Under and Girls 12-18.

George Hannon was born in Kemp, Texas and had a 59-year PGA career including an 18-year term as the University of Texas’ Men’s Golf Coach. Hannon’s career at UT included NCAA Champion teams in 1971 and 1972 as well as 12 Southwest Conference titles. Hannon coached golf legends such as Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Mark Brooks, Phil Blackmar, Brandel Chamblee, Warren Chancellor, Rik Massengale and Paul Thomas. Hannon was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 1991 and was the Golf Coaches Associations’ 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

The tournament was held at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Lost Pines last year. San Antonio’s Garrett Martin won the Boys 15-18 Division by six strokes in 2017, while Plano’s Matthew Comegys won the Boys 14 & Under Division and Austin’s Madelyn Jones won the Girls 12-18 Division.

The George Hannon Junior Invitational is held in the Austin area annually and features one of the top-ranked fields on the LJT Schedule.

Past Champions of this event include Max Miller, Joe and Julia Beck, Scottie and Callie Scheffler, Brendan Redfern, Cole Hammer, Thomas Critch, Levi Valadez, Alexandra Rossi, Chandler Phillips and Hailee Cooper.

This tournament is the third major event on the LJT schedule for the Boys Division and the second for the Girls Division. Players will earn double points towards the LJT Player of the Year Points List, which will determine the LJT Player of the Year in 2018 and define the teams for the Jackie Burke Cup in November. Austin’s Thomas Bockholt III leads the Boys 15-18 Division, while Kingwood’s Elise Parel leads the Girls 12-18 Division and Austin’s Keaton Vo leads the Boys 14 & Under standings.
