Horseshoe Bay's Slick Rock great venue for 71 of the best 14 and under juniors in Texas

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas (July 24, 2012) - In the final round at the 85th Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch, the Boys and Girls 14 & Under divisions created some great drama. A playoff decided the Girls 14 & Under division. In the Boys 14 & Under division, it came down to No. 18. Ashton Radvansky of Sienna Plantation, Texas, and Marisa Marquez, of Amarillo, Texas, came away on top.

Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour since 2005, the Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch is one of the oldest and largest state junior competitions in the country. With 264 players competing, the tournament will stretch over five days on two different courses. The Boys and Girls 14 & Under divisions and Girls 15-18 division will play July 23-25 on Horseshoe Bay's member's only Slick Rock course. The Boys 15-18 division will play July 25-27 on Horseshoe Bay's Ram Rock Course.

In the Boys 14 & Under division, Radvansky, 14, trailed by two shots entering Tuesday's final round. He started off his round, in the second to last group, with a birdie on No. 1, followed by 2 bogeys in three holes. Radvansky recovered, making birdies on No's. 7 and 9 to go out in 35. He got it to 3-under for his round after a birdie on No. 15 but then made bogey on No. 16 and a double bogey on No. 18 to finish at even-par 72 for the day. He sat and watched as the final group come up No. 18 knowing he needed a little magic to win the State Junior Championship. It happened and Radvansky was in the winner's circle for his very last 14 & Under division tournament.

Mark Reppe of Dallas finished in second place, one shot behind Randvansky at 2-over-par 146 for the tournament. Logan Pate, the leader of the Championship heading into the final round, finished in tie for third place with Hunter Reed of McKinney, Texas, and Kyle Hogan of Cypress, Texas. They finished with a 3-over-par 147 tournament total.

In the Girls 14 & Under division, Marquez, who finished tied for third in last year's Texas State Junior Championship, got off to a strong start making birdies on three of her first five holes. She cooled off a little bit, but maintained enough momentum to shoot a 1-over-par 73 in her final round. Her 150 tournament total got her into a playoff with Hailee Cooper of Montgomery, Texas, the first round leader. Marquez made a birdie on her first playoff hole to capture the Texas State Junior Championship she came so close to last year.

Cooper, 12, finished in second place after a final round 5-over-par 77. She would like to follow Marquez's steps in following the next year with a champion trophy in her hands. In third place, Hillary Hernandez of Kyle, Texas, finished five shots back of Marquez and Cooper.

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas (July 23, 2012) - Sunny skies and the occasional breeze greeted an eager field for the 85th Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Horseshoe Bay Resort's Slick Rock Course provided a challenging platform for the first round of play. After round one there is a tie for the lead in both the Girls 15-18 and Boys 14 & Under divisions, with Hailee Cooper leading the Girls 14 & Under division.

In the Girls 15-18 division, Alex Schies, of Mansfield, and Carrollton's Alisa Chong lead after the first round with a 1-under par 71. Schies registered five birdies and four bogeys in her opening round. Chong was able to make three birdies and only two bogeys to leave her tied with Schies. There are four girls sitting one shot off of the first round lead at even-par 72.

In the Boys 14 & Under division, Richmond's Logan Pate and Mark Reppe of Dallas will head into their final round with a two stroke lead after an opening round score of 1-under 71. Pate recorded five birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey during his 1-under par round. Reppe made four birdies and three bogeys in his opening round. Three players are sitting two strokes back at 1-over par 73.

In the Girls 14 & Under division, Montgomery's Hailee Cooper will carry a three stroke leading heading into the final round after shooting an opening round score of 1-over par 73. Cooper ran in five birdies to go along with three bogeys and one triple bogey during the first round. Cooper is three shots ahead of Kyle's Hillary Hernandez, who is alone in second place.

The final round of the Boys and Girls 14 & Under divisions will tee begin at 7:30 AM off Nos. 1 and 10 tees. The second round of the Girls 15-18 division will begin at 12:30 PM also off Nos. 1 and 10 tees. The field in the Girls 15-18 division will be cut to the low 27 and ties following Round 2.

264 of Texas' top juniors competing for the coveted trophy at Horseshoe Bay Resort

DALLAS, Texas (July 20, 2012) - The 85th playing of the Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch will take place July 23-27 at one of Texas' top resort destinations. Horseshoe Bay Resort will host the Championship for the third consecutive year. Some notable past champions of the event include Ben Crenshaw, Jeff Maggert, Scott Verplank, and Angela Stanford.

As part of this year's Championship, there will be a banquet the night before play begins. The featured speaker on Sunday will be Martha Richards, the Women's Golf Coach at the University of Texas. On Tuesday, Maj. Dan Rooney from the United States Air Force will be speaking about his life in the military and his career as a professional golfer.

In addition to being ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard and the World Amateur Golf Rankings, numerous AJGA Performance Stars will be awarded to the top finishers. The winner of each division will become fully exempt on the AJGA.

Stratton Nolen of Austin, last year's Boys 15-18 champion, will look to become the first repeat Boys champion since Hunter Haas in 1994 and 1995. A new champion will be crowned in the Girls 15-18 division, as last year's winner, Lindsey McCurdy will not be competing in this year's Championship.
