Lufkin, TX - The State Amateur Championship was held at Crown Colony Country Club, July 29-August 3rd. Dallas Morning News has placed Crown Colony the #1 course in Texas four times since 1989 and it was honored as the 72nd best course in the Nation by the 2005 Golf Week. Due to the thick rough and heavy rains, the course was playing very long and difficult, but these players were up for the challenge.

Practice rounds and registration began on Sunday the 29th. Afterwards a welcome party was thrown and it gave the ladies a chance to catch up with new players, as well as old friends.

A qualifying round began Monday August 30th at 8 a.m., with groups of four starting on hole #1. The weather was hot, but the rain stayed away. The top 32 would advance to the championship flight, allowing the other 64 to be divided in 4 flights of 16. Five players came in tied for the last four spots with a score of 84. A sudden death swat-fest began and Chloe Mims, Carol Turnage, Jessica Garza, and Ginny Brown advanced with the other 28 players to the championship flight. A local favorite, Hannah Arnold posted a score of 80 to become the Junior Medalist and Kimberly Meck posted a 73 to become the Overall Medalist. Five time champion and 1989 Overall Medalist at Crown Colony, Toni Wiesner, shot a 76, receiving the Senior Medalist award. Congratulations to all of our winners.

The first round of match play began on Tuesday August 31st. An afternoon shower delayed play for about an hour but most of the ladies were able to finish their rounds. A dinner was held that night, and Past President, Suzan Knox, made a speech honoring the great Babe Didrikson Zaharias, whose nephew and family attended.

After the 1st round, the flights were divided in two, adding a consolation bracket to all of them. Play began at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, but it quickly came to a halt with a mid-morning thunderstorm which lasted around 3 hours. By the end of the day some players were able to finish, but many only made it through 9 holes. Round two match play resumed on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. This cut the field in half and round three continued directly afterwards. The weather was nice the rest of the week.

At last the finals were here and after a week of golf these ladies were all determined to go home a winner. The championship match consisted of Kimberly Meck (Austin), who plays at LSU and Kristen Hendrix (Houston), who plays at Baylor. The match changed hands throughout the round, but at the end it was Kristen Hendrix who pulled it out 2 & 1.
