Soerries Wins 2013 South Amateur Championship

(Deerwood, TX) – Weather delays throughout Saturday resulted in the second round being completed Sunday morning.  Forecasts for more weather Sunday afternoon resulted in players staying in their same second round pairings for the final round of the South Amateur Championship, presented by CLUB CHAMPION.  After a long three days, Tony Soerries claimed the final South Regional Championship of 2013 at Kingwood’s Deerwood Club.

Soerries completed his wire-to-wire victory with a three day total of even par 216.  Battling the elements as well as other players trying to make their way up the leader board, Sorries maintained his composure to the tune of a one shot victory.  With two birdies and two bogeys on his final round opening nine, Soerries made the turn at even-par 36.

A rocky start to his back nine included bogeys on holes 10 and 13, as well as a quadruple on the par four 12th.  Soerries, of Spring, made a pivotal birdie on the par four 15th, which would end up being just enough for him to claim his first Texas Golf Association title.  Soerries turned in a final round 5-over par 77 en route to the win.

The Woodlands’ Ryan Kelley entered the final round three strokes behind leader Soerries at 2-under par 142.  Kelley, who played collegiately at Texas A&M, was only able to record two birdies in his final round.  Those two birdies, along with five bogeys, put Kelley at 3-over par 75 for the final round, and 1-over par 217 for the championship.

Jess Bonneau, of Houston, moved up the leader board after sitting in a tie for sixth place after two rounds with a final round 2-over par 74, good for third place individually at 5-over par 221.
