Rain Delays the Completion of Round 2 at the Texas Mid-Amateur

(Boerne, TX) Rain and lightning were the headliners during
the second round of the 2013 Texas Mid-Amateur Championship which is being held
at the Nicklaus designed, Cordillera Ranch. One hundred and thirty-two players
entered today’s second round looking to make a jump up the leaderboard and
secure their spot within the top 54 plus ties that would move on to Sunday’s
final round. Conditions during the morning round were similar to yesterday as
players battled dry and windy conditions which made for very tough scoring
conditions. As the morning wave completed it was much of the same, as the
scoring average continued to hover around 79.2.

Several players made the most of moving day posting scores
that secured their place atop the leaderboard heading into Sunday. Clay Hodge, of
Bryan, posted a second straight round of even-par, 72, which placed him in sole
possession of first place after the completion of the morning wave. Hodge, who
played collegiate golf at Texas A&M, started his day with a birdie on the
par-4 tenth before losing ground with back-to-back bogeys. Making the turn
Hodge stumbled on the par-four first and fifth holes but added three birdies
coming in to secure his even-par round. Also making a charge this morning was
Jerry Achilles of Round Rock. Achilles
play was steady throughout the day as he posted the only under-par round of the
morning which included four birdies and three bogeys on his way to a second
round 71. His two-day total of 146 places him two strokes behind leader Hodge.

Heading into the afternoon rounds mother-nature had
different plans as storms began to populate the surrounding area which caused a
suspension of play at 2:38pm. After a two hour and fifty-two minute delay, play
was resumed with the attempt to complete as many holes as possible before dark.
At 7:28pm play was suspended due to darkness as only one group from the
afternoon wave was able to complete their round. The remaining sixty-three players
will resume play at 8:00am Sunday morning in order to complete their second
round before a cut is made to the top 54 players plus ties. Round three will be
set to begin tomorrow afternoon following the completion of round 2.
