Davies, Dill Lead After Round One At Women's Partnership

HORSESHOE BAY—Sissy Davies and Diane Dill of Montgomery earned 16 points to take the overall lead in the first round of the Women’s Partnership on Monday at Horseshoe Bay Resort. Davies and Dill each made one birdie in their first round and combined for pars.

The Partnership uses a two-player team quota system to determine the winner of each of the six flights and an overall winning team. Competitors accumulate points as follows: A double bogey is awarded one point; a bogey awarded two points; a par awarded three points; a birdie awarded five points; an eagle earns the player eight points; a double eagle earns 10 points and a hole in one earns the player 12 points. Each competitor has a partner in the 36-hole event, and the two scores are totaled together for the overall team score versus the team quota.

Lettia Collins of Spring and Karen Northcutt of The Woodlands are in second place in the Overall Championship and lead the first flight with 14 points. Davies and Dill lead the second flight with 16 points over Terry Dukes and Laura Scott, who have six points.

San Antonio’s Rebecca Spears and Lakeway’s Carolyn Henry lead the third flight with 11 points, while Smithville’s Laurie Eyting and Austin’s Teresa Phillips lead the fourth flight with 10 points.

In the fifth flight, Judy Harris of Abilene and Debbie Cummings of Lubbock lead with one point, while Shirley Robertson and Deb Yarbrough lead the sixth flight with eight points.

Team quotas are adjusted by 50 percent for the final round on Tuesday at Ram Rock Golf Course. The 120-player field features 60 teams competing in the 13th annual Partnership Tournament.

The Partnership has been contested each year since 2003 when Jacque Cooper and Yvonne Gilmore won the overall championship at Dallas Athletic Club. Last year, Chris Johnson and Bonnie Longaker won the overall championship at Riverbend Country Club. Johnson and Longaker combined for a grand total of 28 points, making 22 of those points in the first round.

Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Ram Rock Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and is known as the “Challenger” with its narrow fairway and rolling bentgrass greens. Ram Rock features 62 deep bunkers and ten water hazards and natural dry creeks. The 120-player field is playing Ram Rock Golf Course at 5,306 yards.
