Brooks Leads after Day One of Texas Super Senior

WACO Ed Brooks of Fort Worth sits atop a crowded leaderboard after the first round of the Texas Super Senior at Ridgewood Country Club. Brooks, competing in the Super Senior Division, shot a 1-under par 69 in his opening round to take a two-stroke lead in the 54-hole championship.

Behind Brooks in solo second is Jody Vasquez of Aledo, who carded a 1-over 71. Four players are tied for third at 2-over 72, including host club member Bill Holstead, a past Texas Amateur and Texas Mid-Amateur champion.

Brooks, who won the 2017 Texas Senior Amateur, started on No. 10 and played steady through his first nine, which consisted of eight pars and one bogey. His lone bogey on the side came on No. 11, a tight, tree-lined 348-yard par 4.

Brooks parred the first three holes of his second nine then got his first birdie of the day on No. 4. Brooks dropped a shot on No. 6, but rebounded with birdies on No. 7 and 9 to get into red figures for the round and a two-shot lead in the tournament.

Holstead and Dean Street of Arlington sit in a two-way tie for the Net recognition in the Super Senior Division. The pair both carded Net rounds of even-par 70.

Don Grider of Georgetown is leading the Legends Division after the opening round. His 6-over 76 leads Richard Lundy of Amarillo by two strokes. Grider, no stranger to being at the top of the leaderboard, is the Legends Division two-time defending champion.

Lundy, alone in second place behind Grider, is leading the Net recognition portion of the Legends Division. His opening round of 78 was good for a Net score of 2-over 72.

This year’s edition of the Texas Super Senior is hosted by Ridgewood Country Club in Waco. Designed by Texan Ralph Plummer, Ridgewood opened for play in 1947. The par-70 course will play at approximately 6,248 yards for the Super Senior Division and 5,842 yards for the Legends Division.

The Texas Super Senior is 54 holes of individual stroke play with no cut consisting of two divisions. The Super Senior Division features players 65 years of age and older, while the Legends Division is 75 years of age and older. New in 2019, the championship will also be recognizing the top Net score in both divisions, in addition to the overall Gross champion in each division.

Round 2 starting times will again begin at 7:30 a.m. off both Nos. 1 and 10. For more information and the full leaderboard click here.
