Heidelbaugh, Yerger, Isaac Capture Lanny Wadkins JC

Briefly: Dallas’ Michael Heidelbaugh captured the 2019 Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship at 3-under 141 after carding a 1-under 71 in the final round.   In the Girls 12-18 division, Remington Isaac came from behind to claim the victory at Brookhaven Country Club’s Masters Course Tuesday afternoon. Grant Yerger, tied for the lead heading into the final round, won the Boys 14 & Under division.

Golf Course: The Masters Course is one of three championship courses at Brookhaven Country Club. It was built in 1959 and designed by Press Maxwell with the help of one of golf’s legendary icons, the great Byron Nelson. In the early 1990s, Jeff Brauer renovated the track creating tight, tree lined fairways with large, strategically placed bunkers.

Weather: Temperatures reached a high of 90 degrees, with wind out of the south around 10 mph.

In contention: Michael Heidelbaugh played steady golf Tuesday afternoon, carding three birdies against just two bogeys and walked away victorious. He started the day one shot back, but ended up winning by two shots over three players. Cedar Park’s Hanseung Chang, Plano’s Matthew Comegys, and Lucas’ Jay Pabin finished in a tie for second place. Joshua Lim and Rohit Madireddi finished three shots back of Heidelbaugh and tied for fifth place.
Remington Isaac came from behind in the Girls 12-18 division Tuesday afternoon, posting a final round 3-over 75 to win by two shots. Austin’s Sydney Givens and Nicole Vivier, and Frisco’s Gabbi Bentancourt finished in a tie for second place, at 6-over 150 for the tournament.
At the start of the final round, three players, Grant Yerger, Andrew Petruzzelli and Sunay Jay were tied for the lead. Yerger carded an even-par 72 for the final round to outlast Petruzzelli by one shot. Petruzzelli finished the tournament with a 1-over 73. Nathan Marion of San Antonio finished in third place with back-to-back round of 4-over 76.

What’s Next: The next event on the Legends Junior Tour schedule will be the 93rd Texas Junior Amateur July 22-24, 2019. The Texas Junior Amateur, one of the oldest and largest state championships with 240 kids playing in four divisions, will be conducted at The Clubs at Kingwood. The Forest and Island courses will play host to one of the 4 major championships on the LJT schedule.
