Finals Set For Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play

Briefly: Charles White’s run as the top seed came to an end as Jake Istnick won 1 up in the first semifinal match of the Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond. Colby Harwell, the 2017 champion, defeated Christopher Wheeler in the second semifinal to set up Sunday’s championship match.

Golf Course: Opened in 1999, the award-winning course at Shadow Hawk was designed by Rees Jones. The 7,207-yard, par-72 layout stretches across 274 acres of pristine land and features a great variety of shape and length of holes, ample fairways, artistic bunkering and small, elevated greens. All the subtle challenges are front and center at Shadow Hawk; there are no tricks or gimmicks. Shadow Hawk has earned the well-deserved reputation as a straightforward test of a player’s skill.
 
Weather: Sunny with a high in the mid-90s and a slight variable breeze.
 
In contention: Saturday morning saw the quarterfinals play out with Harwell and Wheeler each winning their match 3 and 2 over Anthony Estorga and Kevin Liberto, respectively. White continued his winning ways versus Joseph Mathis in the morning with a 4 and 3 win. Istnick battled back and forth with Geoff Heller before winning on the 20th hole.
 
What’s Next: The championship match will begin at 7:30 a.m. with live scoring provided.
