Calhoun and Conn Win 2019 Texas Stableford Handicap

KERRVILLE – An impressive final round surge was enough to capture the 2019 Texas Stableford Handicap championship for teammates Daron Calhoun of The Woodlands and Chad Conn of Mansfield. 

Calhoun and Conn scored 51 points Sunday, which was a remarkable 12.5 points over their quota, sending them straight to the top of the leaderboard with 13.25 overall stableford, along with the Kite flight victory.  “Our short game carried us all weekend,” Calhoun said. “It was a great team event for us.”

Final Round Results 

Golf Course: Designed by close friends Joe Finger and Byron Nelson in 1974, Riverhill Country Club’s 18-hole course is a premier location for golf in Texas and the United States.  Based in the heart of Hill Country, the course boasts its rare bent-grass greens and a 7,137 yard, 72-par challenge featuring scenic creeks, hills and a lake throughout the property.  Over time, the course became Nelson’s favorite, where he was quoted saying, “If I had only one golf course to play, it would be Riverhill.”

Weather: Partly cloudy, temperature reaching a high of 95 degrees with a 5 mph wind out of the south.

In Contention: In the runner up position, teammates Joey Hall and Danny Meyer, both out of Katy, carded 59 points, 10.25 over their quota.  The result of a stellar final round upped their overall score on the tournament to 9.75 points and a Nelson flight victory.

Two teams tied for third place with 9.5 points overall stableford:  teammates James Blanton of Arlington and James Switzer of Fort Worth along with 2018’s champions Jamey Freisleben of Montgomery and Russell Schroeder of Laporte.

In the fifth spot were the day-one leaders Mike LaRose of Plano and Josh Lipton of Austin after scoring an overall 8.75 points on the tournament.

Coming in sixth with 6.75 overall points and the Hogan flight victory were teammates Don Cole of Aledo and Ruben Sanchez of Odessa.

What’s Next: The 2019 season continues with the North Amateur at The Courses at Watters Creek in Plano, as well as the South Amateur at Sterling Country Club in Houston.  Both events are August 9-11.
