Ovard on Top After Round 1 of North Amateur

PLANO – Six birdies helped Dawson Ovard of Frisco stand atop the field at the end of the first round at the 2019 North Amateur.  Ovard shot a 4-under-par 68 on the day.  He was 6-under through 14, but bogeyed holes No. 15 & 16, finishing the round with two par-saves. 

Ovard’s lead is one stroke going into Saturday’s second round, which like Friday, will be played under a blistering sun and  in the intense Texas heat.

Golf Course: The Courses at Watters Creek boasts a complex of two golf courses: the Traditions Course is the 18-hole championship-caliber course, while the Players Course is a par-3 course for golf’s upcoming competitors.  The Traditions Course runs 7,031 yards at its longest, winding through creeks and over multiple large ponds.  The course features 419 Bermuda grass tees and fairways, along with mini verde greens – a winning combination for competitive play.

Weather: The sky was partly cloudy in North Dallas today.  It was a high of 103 degrees with a heat index around 110 degrees, along with a steady wind out of the south at 10 mph.

In Contention: Brandon Lawson of Carrollton and Will Adams of Odessa are tied for second, falling just a stroke behind Ovard’s lead.  The two shot a 3-under 69.

In sole possession of the fourth spot is Austin Anderson of Odessa.  He carded a 2-under 70 behind five made birdies.

Six are in a tight race in the fifth spot after shooting 1-under 71:  Casey Fowler of Odessa, Cam Toombs of Breckenridge, Gary Ezmerlian of Fort Worth, Tom Bevington of Frisco, Adam House of Rockwell and Dalton Hankamer of Temple.

What’s Next: Second round tee times begin Saturday at 12:30 p.m. off No. 1 & 10 tees at The Courses at Watters Creek.
