Frizzell, Sinz and Zou lead Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational
Leaders: Frizzell made six birdies on the day including the par-3 eighth and the par-5 ninth, which were his last two holes of the day. Frizzell is looking for his second victory with the Legends Junior Tour in 2019 and his third career LJT win. Sinz started with a birdie on her first hole and went out in even-par after dropping a stroke on the ninth. She bounced back with birdie on Nos. 11 and 13 before dropping strokes on 14 and 18 to get to even-par. Zou had a sensational bogey-free day with five birdies en route to his 66 in the Boys 14 & Under Division.
In Contention: Trailing Frizzell in the Boys 15-18 Division is Katy’s Byungho Lee, who shot 2-under 69 in the first round. Plano’s Matthew Comegys sits alone in third at 1-under, while Austin Zachary Kingsland and Colleyville’s Kevin Watts are tied for fourth at even-par. Trailing Zou in the Boys 14 & Under Division is Austin’s Trenton Mierl, who shot 4-under 67 in the opening round. Mierl is seeking his third win in the Boys 14 & Under Division this year and trails Zou by one stroke heading into the final round. Frisco’s Davis Ovard sits in third place at 2-under 69, while Austin’s Kevin Mu is in fourth at 1-over 72 and two other players tied for fifth at 2-over.
Event Format: The Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational is a 36-hole stroke play event with players competing in three divisions: Boys 15-18, Girls 12-18 and Boys 14 & Under. The field was selected using exemptions from Texas Junior Golf Alliance Events throughout the year and through the LJT Player of the Year Standings which players earn points in by competing in Alliance events.
About the Texas Junior Golf Alliance: The Texas Junior Golf Alliance was formed in 2012 and offers junior golfers a clear path to the best tournaments in Texas. The alliance is made up of the Legends Junior Tour, the South Texas PGA, the North Texas PGA and the Houston Golf Association. The alliance allows players a chance to compete at all levels and to grow their games as they progress.
Weather: The morning was chilly as clouds cluttered up the sky and caused temperatures to range from 50 to 60 degrees. In the afternoon, the sun started to poke through the clouds and provide a little warmth with the winds ranging between 10-15 miles per hour throughout the day. The course was soft after receiving more than four inches of rain on Friday morning.
Golf Course: Eagle Pointe Golf Club opened for play in 1999 and was designed by Rick Forester. The rolling hills and elevation changes make Eagle Pointe very different from most Houston area course. The fairways are surrounded by towering pine trees and the Cherry Point Gully weaves its way through the course, while the Old River is the boundary on several holes. The course stretches out to almost 7,000 yards in the Boys 15-18 Division, 6,500 yards in the Boys 14 & Under Division and 5,900 yards in the Girls 12-18 Division.
What’s next: The Final Round of the Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational is scheduled for an 8:00 am start on Sunday, Oct 27 with tee times going until 10:00 am off the No. 1 and 10 tees. At the conclusion of play on Sunday, the top finishers will be awarded.
What’s at Stake: The event is ranked by Golfweek as well as Junior Golf Scoreboard and players are competing for points towards the LJT Player of the Year Award and a spot on their respective Jackie Burke Cup teams.
