Golf Course: Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club’s Live Oak Course was designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby in 1993. It was redesigned by D.A. Weibring/Golf Resources Group in 2006. The 18-hole championship golf course features tree-lined fairways, as the rolling terrain of the Hill Country creates a scenic test of golf for players of all skill levels. Round 1 was contested at 6,688 yards in the Boys Division and 5,908 yards in the Girls Division.

Weather: The temperature reached a high of 81 degrees with a gentle breeze at around 7 mph.

In Contention: The Fair Oaks Ranch native, Zach Heffernan, displayed poise throughout his opening round. The 2019 Texas Junior Amateur Champion leaned on his local knowledge as he carded three birdies out of his last four holes to post 3-under 69. Heffernan, a 2021 Baylor University commit, totaled seven birdies on the day and will begin Round 2 tied for the lead.

“I was comfortable, but it was weird playing the course smart,” Heffernan said. “Normally I am just playing it (Live Oak Course) for fun. I just knew the lines off the tee and where I could miss it.”

Jeffrey Zatorski of Houston will join Heffernan in Sunday’s final group after an opening 3-under 69 as well. The junior at Memorial High School began his round with three bogeys over his first four holes, but rallied off eight birdies over his closing 14 holes to join the top of the leaderboard.

“Those three putts kind of killed me,” Zatorski said. “But I rallied off eight birdies and was able to shoot a good score.”

Colin Slater and Blake Moreno of Austin sit three shots off the lead after rounds of even-par 72.

Tillie Claggett of The Woodlands fired a 1-under 71 in Round 1 to lead the Girls Division. The 2019 North Texas Classic Champion played steady golf dropping only one shot on the par-4 14th. She carded two birdies and leads the field by one stroke.

“I hit it well off the tee and hit a lot of greens and made a lot of up and downs,” Claggett said. “I plan to take advantage of my longer distance and get a couple shots on the field.”

Symran Shah of Carrollton and the 2019 Texas Junior Amateur Champion, Nicole Vivier of Austin, sit one shot behind Claggett after posting even-par rounds of 72.

What’s Next: Final Round tee times start Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. off No. 1 & 10 tees at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club’s Live Oak Course.
