Kingsland, Yi and Hofferkamp Win Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic

LAKEWAY – Zachary Kingsland of Austin fired a 4-under 68 to clinch the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic at Lakeway Country Club’s Live Oak Course by one stroke. Vera Yi of Austin matched her opening round 2-over 74 to win the Girls 12-18 Division by two strokes, while Austin Hofferkamp of The Woodlands came from behind with a final round even-par 72 to win the Boys 14 & Under Division.

Leaders: Kingsland posted a 4-under 68 in the final round to win by one stroke in the Boys 15-18 Division. He made four birdies on Sunday with no bogeys bringing his total up to eight birdies over 36 holes. This win is Kingsland’s second in the Boys 15-18 Division with the Legends Junior Tour. After holding a tie for the 36-hole lead, Yi captured her first LJT victory in the Girls 12-18 Division after shooting consecutive rounds of 2-over 74. She made six birdies over the weekend, including the par-4 14th both days. Austin Hofferkamp of The Woodlands came from four shots behind the 18-hole leaders to win the Boys 14 & Under Division. He Hofferkamp carded four birdies in his final round to clinch the title by one stroke.  
 
In Contention: In the Boys 15-18 Division, San Antonio’s Patrick Kahanek finished one stroke back of Kingsland after shooting 1-under 71 on Sunday and finishing at 1-under overall. Lantana’s Joshua Lee and Boerne’s Jacob King finished in a tie for third after shooting 2-under 70 on Sunday and finishing at 1-over-par. Heath’s Matthew Watkins finished fifth, while Fredericksburg’s Denver Schneider finished sixth, Katy’s Treed Huang finished seventh and Andrew Spaudling tied with Christian Clark for eighth.
 
In the Girls 12-18 Division, Raleygh Simpson of Kerrville and Tillie Claggett of The Woodlands tied for second at 6-over 150. Katy’s Maye Huang finished fourth at 9-over total, while Avery Thompson rounded out the top-5 at 10-over par.
 
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, the 2020 Winter Classic Champion, Trenton Mierl of Austin, finished second and one shot behind Hofferkamp at 8-over par. Austin’s Nicholas Logis carded rounds of 79-76 to finish third, while Awesome Burnett of Flower Mound, Rhett O’Rear of Plano, Grant Yerger of Driftwood and Bowen Ballis of Shenandoah all tied fourth at 12-over 156.
 
Tournament History: The Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic features past champions that include Cole Hammer, Cooper Dossey, Annika Clark, Maddie Szeryk, Tayler Termeer and Macy Fox. The event is in its 12th year on the LJT schedule and is the second Open Event of the 2020 season.
 
Course: Lakeway Country Club’s Live Oak course is hosting the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic for the second time in the last three years. The course was designed by Leon Howard and bends through the residential Lakeway neighborhood in Austin. The course features rolling hills with tree-lined fairways and small greens. 
 
Weather: Sunday’s weather was near perfect at Lakeway Country Club. Temperatures ranged from the high 50s in the morning to the mid 70s in the afternoon. The wind picked up on Sunday with gusts going upwards of 25 miles per hour throughout the day.
 
About the LJT: The Legends Junior Tour is part of the Texas Junior Golf Alliance, which is a joint venture between the Texas Golf Association, Northern and Southern PGA and Houston Golf Association. The tour operates as part of the Texas Golf Association and its foundation. Since its inception in 2005, the tour has provided funds to promote junior golf initiatives while conducting some of the state’s top junior championships including the Veritex Bank Byron Nelson Junior Championship, Texas Junior Amateur, Texas Girls’ Invitational and Texas Cup Invitational.
 
What’s Next: The Legends Junior Tour heads to Houston for the Texas Girls’ Invitational which returns to Bentwater Yacht & Country Club on Feb. 16-17. The Texas Cup Invitational is the next stop for the boys as it returns to Stonebridge Ranch Country Club on March 9-11.
