Wayne Wright Leads Super Senior Amateur after Round 2

FORT WORTH – Wayne Wright fired an even-par 71 to take the lead on Tuesday in the second round of the 2021 Texas Super Senior Amateur at Ridglea Country Club’s North Course.

Cooler than expected temperatures and swirling winds in the 20-mph range created tough playing conditions in the second round.

“On these greens, wow, you have to be really careful,” Wright said. “If you are putting down wind, it is quick.”

Wright started off 3-over through his first six holes, but finished the rest of his round at 3-under par.

“Well, it started off real shaky,” he said. “I three-putted holes 10, 12, and 14. I was 3-over really quick. I birdied 17 and 18 to get me to 1-over at the turn and then played solid on the back nine.”

As the 2017 North Senior Am champion at Ridglea’s Championship Course, Wright will look to win at the North Course on Wednesday. He is no stranger to this event, as he took home the 2017 Super Senior Am Championship at Pine Dunes Resort in Frankston.

James Peebles and Steve Moran sit in a tie for second place at 5-over through two rounds. Peebles of Fort Worth on Tuesday shot a 6-over 77 and Moran of Houston finished at 2-over 73.

Samuel Kent sits in fourth at 6-over through two rounds, and Jamey Freisleben holds fifth place at 7-over. Three players are tied for sixth at 8-over par.

Denny Alexander of Fort Worth leads the Legends division after shooting 6-over 77 in the second round. He sits at 11-over for the championship and two strokes ahead of Mike Rice from Houston.

The Ridglea CC North Course demands accurate shots from every player with its rolling fairways and smaller greens that break subtly. Lush green from overseeding, Ridglea was again in beautiful shape for the second round. The Super Senior division, for amateur men ages 65 and older, played from a total yardage of 6,229. The Legends division (75 and older) played from 5,827 yards.

Four of the past five Super Senior Amateur champions are in the field, including Fort Worth’s John Grace, who won the event in 2015. The 2020 Super Senior Amateur was canceled because of COVID-19.
