Comegys Leads Wire-to-Wire to Win 2022 South Amateur

Victoria — Austin’s Brian Comegys wins the 2022 South Amateur at Victoria Country Club. The incoming freshman with Abilene Christian University’s Men’s Golf Team lead wire-to-wire in a dominant performance, shooting a tournament total of 67-71-68 (206).

Champion: Brian Comegys, of Austin, won this year’s South Amateur in dominant fashion. Three straight rounds under par led to a five-stroke victory. Comegys opened with a first round 5-under-par 67, which earned him a narrow one stroke lead. He didn’t have his best stuff in the second round but held on to card a 1-under-par 71 and maintain a three-stroke lead. His final round play left no openings for the field, as he fired a 4-under-par 68 that didn’t include a bogey until the 16th hole.

In Contention: David Harrison, of San Antonio, finished runner-up shooting a tournament total of 5-under-par 211. Harrison’s second place finish was powered by a bogey free final round 4-under-par 68. Holden Hamilton, of Texas City, finished in solo third place. Joining Comegys and Harrison as one of only three players who shot par or better each round, Hamilton went 71-70-72 (213).

Additional Highlights: There were two hole-in-ones during the second round. Robert Howell, of Cleveland, got the fireworks started on the 8th hole with his 8-iron from 163 yards. Trevor Bailey, of New Braunfels, carded the second ace of the day with a 9-iron from 146 yards on the 12th hole.

Course: Originally built by E.L. Grunder as a nine-hole course in 1924, the current eighteen-hole layout was redesigned by Joe Finger. The private club stretches out to 6,950 yards, features well-manicured fairways lined with trees, and is highlighted by its large undulating greens that provide a variety of challenging hole locations.

Weather: Friday’s first round saw sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid-90’s. Saturday’s second round reached a high temperature of 90 with a threat of thunderstorms, but play was finished without delay. During Sunday’s final round, temperatures climbed into the high-90’s and play was suspended multiple times due to intermittent thunderstorms.

Tournament History: The South Amateur is in its 19th year on the schedule and is the final regional event in South Texas for the 2022 season. The tournament is a 54-hole stroke play event with players competing in a single, no-cut division.

TGA Regional Series: The TGA Regional Series is made up of four events for each region of North and South Texas. There is a Regional Four-Ball, Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur and Amateur for both the North and South. The West Texas Amateur also serves as an event in the Regional Series and is open to any players in the state of Texas that meet eligibility.

POY Points Race: By winning, Comegys was awarded 1000 points towards South Player of the Year standings.

Next Up: The 2022 South Regional Series comes to an end with the conclusion of the South Amateur. Three of the four TGA Men’s Majors are next on the schedule including the Texas Four-Ball, Texas Mid-Amateur and Texas Senior Amateur.
