46th Texas Stableford Handicap Set for Nov. 11-13

Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville will be the host site for the 46th Texas Stableford Handicap. The championship will take place from Nov. 11-13.

Founded in 1974, Riverhill Country Club was designed by Texas Golf Hall of Famers Joe Finger and Byron Nelson, who is also a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Built on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, the 7,137-yard, par-72 course features tree-lined fairways, natural water features, and dramatic elevation changes which provide sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The iconic Central Texas club, a popular and frequently visited venue, has been the site of a wide array of TGA championships since its opening.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to return to Riverhill Country Club for one of our most exciting and unique events,” said Read Langhenry, TGA Tournament Director. “The club has been an incredible supporter of amateur golf through the years, and we are grateful to be back at this wonderful facility for what is sure to be another enjoyable championship experience.”

First held in 1976, the Texas Stableford Handicap is open to male amateur golfers who have a WHS Handicap Index® of 20.0 or less, will have reached the age of 21 on or before the tournament start date, and are current Texas residents.

The two-player team points competition is contested over 54 holes using the Modified Stableford scoring system. Under this format, players are awarded points based on their performance on each hole, with the aim of accumulating enough points to equal or better a preestablished goal. The number of points awarded on each hole is directly related to the score posted in comparison to par– more points given to better scores – corresponding to the following table: 8 for a double eagle, 6 for an eagle, 4 for a birdie, 2 for par, 1 for bogey, and 0 for double bogey or higher.

Teams in the starting field are preassigned to one of four flights based on the players’ combined Low Handicap Index™ over a 11-month period ending on Nov. 2.

Each team has a preset daily points goal derived from a percentage of the sum of the players’ Course Handicap™. After the completion of each round, the team quota is adjusted by one-half of the excess or deficit to determine the next day’s points goal. The total number of points earned for 54 holes will be used to determine final standings in each flight. The overall winner will be the team with the most plus (or fewest minus) points, regardless of flight.

At last year’s championship held at Riverhill Country Club, Curtis Harris of Eastland and Stephen Knight of Fredericksburg accumulated 3 points more than their team quota over three days for an impressive wire-to-wire victory. The duo was the only team to end the championship in positive territory.

Once the action gets underway from the 46th Texas Stableford Handicap at Riverhill, log on to the TGA website for starting times, live scoring updates, and daily recaps.

Championship Information

Format/Field Size: The field will be limited to 56 teams. Play will be contested over 54 holes of modified Stableford scoring with 18 holes per day. Teams will be pre-flighted based on the two players’ combined LHI “Low Handicap Index.” Handicap indexes used for all championship rounds will come from each player’s LHI from January 1, 2022 (first day of World Handicap System) to November 2, 2021 (close of entries). Each player’s playing handicap will then be calculated after taking 90% of their Low Handicap Index. See the “Scoring” section below for more information on the calculation of Team Quota’s.

Tees/Yardages: There will be three separate tees used for the Championship. See below for handicap adjustment explanation. Players will be assigned to the corresponding tee/yardage based on their age as of the first round of the championship.

  • Players 54 years of age and younger will play approx. 6,400 – 6,500 yards (Open tees);
  • Players 55 to 64 years of age will play approx. 6,100 – 6,200 yards (Senior tees);
  • Players 65 years of age and older will play approx. 5,900 – 6,000 yards (Super Senior tees).

Note: Partners do not have to play from the same tee/yardage. Official yardage will be determined and announced at on-site registration. Players do not have the option of playing form a different tee/yardage.

Scoring: Total plus or fewest minus points for 54 holes will be used to determine final standings in each flight. The overall champions will be the team with the most points or fewest minus points, regardless of flight. Team Quotas are based on the Stableford system below:

Points: Double Bogey or higher = 0 points; Bogey = 1 point; Par = 2 points; Birdie = 4 points; Eagle = 6 points; Double Eagle = 8 points.

Day 1 team Quota = 72 points, less the sum of 90% of each players course handicap.

Day 2 & 3 Quotas = Prior day’s quota adjusted by 50% of the previous days excess or deficit.

Handicap Adjustments: Each team will have a pre-assigned quota based on the Stableford scoring system as shown above. The first round quota is 72 points, less 90% of the sum of each player’s course handicap. Example – Player A has a course handicap of 14 x .90 = 12.6/13. Player B has a course handicap or 10 x .90 = 9.
The combined team handicap index is 22 (13+9). The team quota is 72-22 = 50. The quota will be adjusted by 1/2 of the excess or deficit at the completion of each round for the next day’s quota. Example – If Player A and Player B recorded 46 points in Round 1, their new Team Quota for Round 2 will be 48 [(46-50)/2]. Since they failed to reach their quota, their new quota will be deducted from Round 1’s Quota.

Note: Exact course rating and yardages will be determined prior to the first tournament round. Course ratings listed above are for example purposes only. More information will be provided during on-site registration.

What’s Included: The entry fee includes greens, cart, and range fees for the practice round and all championship rounds. The entry fee also includes a championship gift and food/beverage after the completion of each round.

Texas Stableford Handicap Set for Nov. 20-22

The 2020 Texas Stableford Handicap will be played Nov. 20-22 at longtime host Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville. This year’s championship was originally slated for mid-summer but was rescheduled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conducted by the Texas Golf Association since 1976, the championship will be contested over 54 holes using team quotas based on the Modified Stableford scoring format.

Teams are pre-flighted based on the two players’ combined Low Handicap Index over the past 11 months. Total score for 54 holes will be used to determine final standings in each flight. The overall winner will be the team with the most plus (or fewest minus) points, regardless of flight.

Opened for play in 1974, Riverhill Country Club was designed by Byron Nelson and Joe Finger. Nestled deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Riverhill has consistently received high marks for its playability, scenic beauty and relaxed atmosphere. For this year’s championship, the course will play approximately 6,500 yards with a par of 72.

Daron Calhoun of The Woodlands and Chad Conn of Mansfield accumulated 13.25 total points over three days to win the Overall Division at the 2019 Texas Stableford Handicap at Riverhill CC. Joey Hall and Danny Meyer, both of Katy, finished in second place with 9.75 points.
