Megan Tang Leads Women’s Stroke Play Championship

GRANBURY – Fort Worth’s Megan Tang fired a 2-under 70 in Saturday’s second round of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship to take a two-shot lead at Harbor Lakes Golf Club. The senior at the University of Illinois Chicago enters the final round of the TGA women’s major with seven birdies and five bogeys through 36 holes.

“Today was a grind,” Tang said immediately following her round on Saturday. “I kind of just stayed in the moment and made sure I stayed aggressive.”

Tang’s bogey on the par-3 fourth hole was the turning point in her round. “My first bogey really kickstarted me to make more birdies. That was definitely the turning point.”

The Fort Worth native plans to keep the same gameplan heading into Sunday’s final round as a solid contingent of accomplished players are on her heels.

Included in the pack chasing Tang is a trio of players tied for second at even-par and two back of the lead. McKinney’s Shyla Brown, Martins Mill’s Mia Nixon, and Alise Knudson of Dallas are all looking to claim their first TGA major championship.

Nixon, a rising sophomore at Texas A&M, fired the low round of the tournament on Saturday with a 3-under 69.

“I think focusing on hitting the fairways was a big thing for me,” Nixon said of her recipe for success. “I grew up in Texas and it’s pretty windy so being able to keep the ball low and get it on the green is helpful.”

Defending champion Camryn Carreon took advantage of moving day by carding a 2-under 70 and moving up five spots on the leaderboard. The San Antonio native is three shots back of the lead at 1-over for the championship and will look to defend her title in Sunday’s final round.

Three players sit in a tie for sixth at 3-over total including round one leader Avery Blake of The Woodlands, Montgomery’s Remington Isaac, and Arlington’s Madison Le.

In Saturday’s second round Harbor Lakes’ front nine played to a 38.31 strokes average while the back nine played to a 38.60 strokes average.

Saturday’s total yardage for the Championship flight was 5,856 yards.

This is the fourth TGA championship to be held at Harbor Lakes. The club previously hosted the 2006 and 2012 Women’s Senior Stroke Play and the 2022 North Texas Regional Amateur.

Located approximately 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Harbor Lakes Golf Club opened in 2003 and was designed by Dick Phelps. The par-72 layout, which will play approximately 6,300 yards during the championship, is routed through a varied landscape of rolling hills, hardwood trees, and open meadows. With many fairways and greens guarded by penalty areas, bunkers, and run-off areas, the course presents an exacting challenge to even the most accomplished players.

The 9th Women’s Stroke Play is being contested over 54 holes of individual stroke play. 60 players are competing in the Championship Flight. The remaining 11 players are competing in the Flights Division.

D’Lynn McCoppin leads the Flights Division by seven shots at 3-over total after rounds of 74-73.

The final round of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship starts Sunday at 8:00 am. For more information, including complete scoring, click here.

Avery Blake Leads Women’s Stroke Play Championship

GRANBURY – The Woodlands’ Avery Blake leads the Women’s Stroke Play Championship after carding an impressive 2-under 70 in the first round on Friday. The junior at Oral Roberts University poured in six birdies at Harbor Lakes Golf Club and was the only round under par. She’ll take a two-shot lead into Saturday’s second round.

“My mindset was just to go low as best I could,” Blake said of her gameplan ahead of the first round. “Tomorrow, I’m just going to keep taking it shot by shot and try to keep advancing.”

Sitting two shots back of the lead is Fort Worth’s Megan Tang who shot an even-par round of 72. Tang had a clean scorecard with two birdies and two bogeys on the day.

McKinney’s Shyla Brown and Georgetown’s Mattingly Palmer share the third spot on the leaderboard after shooting rounds of 1-over 73. Brown comes into this event playing well including on our Legends Junior Tour. She has won her first two LJT events at the Bluebonnet Championship and Spring Preview.

San Antonio’s Jordan Salisbury, Trophy Club’s MacKenzie Moore, Austin’s Allyson Black, Fort Worth’s Catherine Matranga, and Alise Knudson of Dallas are all in a log jam tied for fifth at 2-over. Knudson had the low first round from our featured groups.

Five players sit in a tie for tenth after rounds of 3-over 75 including defending champion Camryn Carreon of San Antonio. Carreon recently won the NCAA Regional Tournament in San Antonio to cap off an impressive senior campaign at University of Texas at San Antonio. The 2022 TGA Women’s Player of the year will look to make a move up the leaderboard in Saturday’s second round.

Harbor Lakes’ back nine played particularly tough for the field in Friday’s first round. It produced 100 bogey’s or worse and played to a 40.62 strokes average.

Friday’s total yardage for the Championship flight was 6,134 yards.

Round 2 of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship starts Saturday at 8:00 am. For more information, including complete scoring, click here.

9th Women’s Stroke Play Championship Set for June 23-25

Harbor Lakes Golf Club in Granbury will be the host site for the 9th Women’s Stroke Play. Conducted by the Texas Golf Association, the championship is scheduled for June 23-25.

This will be the fourth TGA championship to be held at Harbor Lakes. The club previously hosted the 2006 and 2012 Women’s Senior Stroke Play and the 2022 North Texas Regional Amateur.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to return this year to Harbor Lakes Golf Club for one of our premier championships,” said Amy Worthington, TGA Director of Women’s Operations. “We know the club and its membership, which have long been passionate supporters of amateur golf, will provide an exceptional experience for the players.”

With many fairways and greens guarded by water hazards, bunkers, and run-off areas, the course presents an exacting challenge to even the most accomplished players.

“Harbor Lakes requires a combination of strength, precision, and sound course management to score well,” Worthington said. “It’s a fantastic course with lots of character and nuance and will be a great test for the state’s best female amateur golfers.”

The 9th Women’s Stroke Play will be contested over 54 holes of individual stroke play. The top 30 players with the lowest World Handicap System Indexes® will compete in the Championship Flight, plus those players who opted into the Championship Flight at the time entries were submitted. The remaining players will compete in one of two additional flights.

Defending champion Camryn Carreon of San Antonio will head the 84-player starting field at Harbor Lakes. Carreon, a then-senior at UT San Antonio, carded rounds of 74-71-68 to win the 8th Women’s Stroke Play last year at Traditions Club at Texas A&M in Bryan. Her 3-under 213 total was good for a three-stroke victory over runner-up Ellie Szeryk of Allen. Carreon will look to become the first player in the championship’s 9-year history to capture back-to-back titles.

Joining Carreon are several other top finishers from the 2022 championship, including Elina Sinz of Katy (who finished 4th), Delaney Martin of Boerne (8th), Alise Knudson of Dallas (T9), Megan Tan of Fort Worth (11th), and Mason Lewis of Granbury (T12).

Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds will be posted on the TGA website no later than June 21. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Harbor Lakes Golf Club.

First held in 2015, the Women’s Stroke Play is one of the two women’s majors on the TGA’s annual schedule along with the Women’s Texas Amateur. Thus far, three players have won both the Women’s Stroke Play and Women’s Texas Amateur. They are Hanna Alberto, Annika Clark, and Emma McMyler. Only McMyler has captured both major titles in the same year.

Camryn Carreon Wins the 2022 Women’s Stroke Play

BRYAN – UTSA senior Camryn Carreon rose to victory after being solo second heading into Sunday’s final round at the Women’s Stroke Play. The San Antonio native finished at 3-under par 213 for the 54-hole championship, to clench the title.

“I am feeling pretty accomplished,” Carreon said happily. “This course will give it to you, but I just stuck to my lines and stayed with it. I’m just really happy.”

Carreon started the final round off by birdieing the first two holes, as well as the sixth one, and ended up carding a 1-under 35. As the back nine came, Carreon and second round leader Ellie Szeryk, were neck and neck.

“This was a good match,” said Carreon. “Ellie and I were back and forth a ton, which made it a lot of fun.”

A strong mentality was key for the leaders as they headed into the back nine. Carreon was able to stick to her game plan, resorting back to patience, and dropped four birdies on the back nine, making it seven birdies total for the day.

“I was sticking it pretty tight, trying to stay calm and stick to the right speed on the greens,” Carreon recalled. “When those birdie putts fell, I just used it as momentum.”

This is a championship that Carreon will never forget, as she been striving to etch her name onto the trophy for years. Having her father as her caddy this week just puts the cherry on the top.

“I have been playing this event since high school and have been close, but was never able to win it,” the champion remarked. “It feels awesome to finally win this tournament, especially with having my dad caddying for me.”

The TGA extends its greatest appreciation to the Traditions Club at Texas A&M, including all of its staff and members, for all of their hard work in delivering such a phenomenal championship week.

An additional thank you to General Manager Bill Slade and Head Golf Professional Bryan Minnick for all of their efforts in producing an awesome week at Traditions Club.

We are also very grateful for every single one of our TGA Volunteers who gave their time and skills to be here and assist us this week.

Ellie Szeryk Jumps to the Top in the Women’s Stroke Play Championship

BRYAN – Ellie Szeryk of Allen jumps up 10 spots to the top of the leaderboard in Saturday’s second round after firing a bogey-free 5-under 67, to get her at a total of 1-under, at Traditions Club. She is now leading the Women’s Stroke Play Championship by two shots heading into Sunday’s final round.

“I feel really good, and I was very excited today,” Szeryk mentioned about her bogey-free 67 today. “I am really enjoying myself out there.”

The SMU Mustang’s bogey-free card consisted of a 2-under 34 front nine and a 3-under 33 back nine. Szeryk’s shots were on line and precise as she almost holed out twice today in the second round. And she has her wedges to thank for that.

“Both my wedges and putting were great today,” said Szeryk. “I knew what was working.”

Szeryk has been here before, in a final group heading into the final round and she is ready to dominate whilst in that position.

“I haven’t been in this position in a while, so I’m just going to soak it up,” said Szeryk excitedly. “I’m just going to go out there to have fun and be confident.”

After the first round yesterday, Camryn Carreon sat tied second, and now heading into the final round she is solo second. Carreon carded a 1-under 71 in the second round, putting her at 1-over total, and is content with how she has performed so far in the championship.

“Off the tee I kept myself in play and that’s what you need here,” Carreon said. “I stayed patient and that’s what I will continue to do for tomorrow’s final round.”

Recent NCAA National Champion Sadie Englemann shot a 1-under 71 in the second round, which jumped her up 8 shots to tied third. Englemann will continue to dominate as she is in the final grouping for Sunday’s final round. Texas A&M’s very own Lauren Nguyen joins Englemann at tied third, after carding an even-par 72, moving herself up two spots. Both are at a total of 3-over par for the tournament.

First round leader, Sophie Biediger of SMU and Audrey Tan of UNT (University of North Texas), are both sitting tied fifth as they are at 5-over total.

The final round of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship starts Sunday at 8:00 am. For more information, including complete scoring,  click here.
