GOLF GENIUS TM STEERING COMMITTEE FORMED

With the Texas Golf Association and many of the country’s other major Allied Golf Associations transitioning to providing Golf Genius Tournament Management to their member clubs, a national steering committee has been formed that will collaborate with Golf Genius on current and future projects.

Shona DeMint, the TGA’s Director of Learning & Development and who assists club staffs with Golf Genius issues, has been named to the newly established team, which is comprised of representatives from each U.S. region. As a member of the steering committee, Shona will be in a unique position to bring attention to any topics TGA Member Clubs may have about the overall Golf Genius user experience.

JOIN TEXAS LEAGUE PLAY AND BOOST CLUB SPIRIT

Texas League Play begins its 18th season in 2022 looking to expand the roster and attract more TGA Member Clubs that would like to join in on the fun.

Regional Conferences may be established anywhere in the state where there are four TGA Member Clubs who are interested in competing against each other in a six-match regular season. Each team will host three matches and will play an away match against each opponent at their course. Conference winners earn a spot in the Championship Playoffs, which will be held June 2-5 at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Since its inception in 2006, Texas League Play has helped to foster the appeal of interclub matches across the state. This exciting team match play competition utilizes the Low Handicap Index established by the World Handicap System to level the playing field for competitors of all skill levels and presents TGA Member Clubs with a unique opportunity to engage with their members. The thrill golfers get out of playing for their home club in Texas League Play is an amazing way to provide high-energy fun, build camaraderie, boost club spirit, and strengthen member relationships.

Registration for this year’s Texas League Play opened on Jan. 5 and will close on Feb. 23. If your members would enjoy being part of this unforgettable golf experience and need some help getting started, please contact Justin Guthrie, TGA Tournament Director.

RISK MANAGEMENT [CMAA]

To protect their clubs long-term, managers should start planning now, experts advise.

In October 2017, the Tubbs Fire destroyed 1,600 homes in the Fountaingrove neighborhood of Santa Rosa, Calif.

Also in the fire’s wake was The Fountaingrove Club.

Damage to the club’s property was considerable, leading to a $16.5 million clubhouse replacement project. Yet, it could have been much worse. The 18-hole, Ted Robinson Sr.- designed golf course was largely spared from the fire, suffering only damage to its bunkers.

A new, state-of-the art, 22,100-square-foot clubhouse was completed in October 2021.

Although the member-owned club, managed by Troon Privé, was able to recover from the fire, lessons were certainly learned.

One lesson is that risk management should never be overlooked, regardless of a club’s location or financial standing. Ricky L. Potts Jr., membership director of The Fountaingrove Club, advises club managers to be ready for any type of risk that could occur – from natural disasters to unexpected, unnatural incidents.

“Managers should do everything they can today to prepare for what may occur tomorrow,” Potts said.

In an article for Club Management Association of America’s Club Management Magazine, author Chris Lewis looks at initiatives club managers should consider implementing to be prepared for any eventuality.
