Free Subscription to Global Golf Post

The Texas Golf Association has partnered with Global Golf Post to provide TGA members a FREE subscription.  Global Golf Post is a digital only golf publication that eveyone is talking about.

The Post delivers a complete summary of the week in golf to your email inbox every Monday 50 weeks a year. TGA members will receive the customized Texas edition of the Global Golf Post, which includes exclusive content about the game in the Lone Star State and coverage of TGA championships.

Communications

The TGA has developed a sophisticated interactive website to communicate with its member clubs, promote tournaments and programs, and make participation in Association activities easy. The Association also sends out a Handicap Index Update to everyone who signs up for the service and publishes both a digital magazine, Lone Star Golf, and a print newsletter, Solid Contact.  These provide in-depth stories about the people and events making headlines throughout the year.

Competitions

The TGA annually conducts the state’s most prestigious championships for the benefit of its membership. Some of these include the Texas Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur, Mid-Amateur Match Play, Father-Son, Four-Ball, Stableford Handicap, and the Texas Shootout.  Women's Championships include the WTGA State Amateur Championship, Women's Stroke Play Championship, Women's Four-Ball Championship and many more!

The TGA also conducts nine regional tournaments each year: the North and South Amateur, North and South Mid-Amateur, North and South Four-Ball, North and South Senior Amateur and the West Texas Amateur. Texas League Play (club/team competition) is designed for golfers of all ages and abilities to represent their club in spirited competition against other TGA Member Clubs in their area. The Medalist Series provides golfers the opportunity to gain competitive experience in a more relaxed environment. For a complete rundown of all the competitions on the TGA schedule, click on “PLAY” in the bar at the top of the page.

Course and Slope Ratings

Utilizing regional teams of raters located throughout the state, the TGA rates both member club and non-member club courses in accordance with the USGA Course and Slope Rating System. The USGA requires that all new golf courses be re-rated after five years. All courses must be re-rated every 10 years. Each year the TGA rates approximately 70 to 95 courses, providing precise course and slope ratings for each set of tees so that all golfers can enjoy the benefits of an accurate and equitable handicap system.

Educational Seminars

Each year the TGA hosts a number of educational seminars, scheduled throughout the calendar year at various sites across the state, to educate and inform the golfing community on issues ranging from handicapping to course rating to the Rules of Golf to other issues that either directly or indirectly impacts the game of golf.

FUN Golf

In 2015, the TGA introduced a new series of activities designed with the recreational golfer in mind.  These FUN activities are great ways to meet other golfers, play different courses, and just enjoy the game in a non-competitive environment. Among much else, the FUN Golf initiative includes such activities as Play Days, TGA Travel, Play 9 and the Texas Shamble.

Handicaps

The TGA provides and administers the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN), a timely and quality handicap service and system created and sanctioned by the United States Golf Association.

Being part of the GHIN network allows member clubs access to more than 14,000 clubs across the nation with over 2.3 million golfers. Members can post their scores at any of these GHIN clubs, which will be promptly routed back to their home clubs.

In addition, the GHIN system has the most advanced tournament scheduling program available, which allows TGA member clubs to streamline and enhance their tournament administration procedures. For more detailed information, click on “JOIN” in the bar at the top of the page.

Junior Golf

The Legends Junior Tour was formed in 2005 and is the foremost tour for serious junior golfers. In 2012, the Texas Junior Golf Alliance was established as a cooperative venture between the TGA, Northern and Southern Texas PGA sections, and the Houston Golf Association. This partnership is designed to give competitive junior golfers a clear pathway to follow from beginner to intermediate to advanced, all while providing greater access to top tier competition statewide and easing the burden of travel expense. The Legends Junior Tour is home to such prestigious events as the Byron Nelson Junior Championship, Texas Cup Invitational, Jackie Burke Cup and Texas State Junior Championship.

Representation

The TGA represents the interests of its member clubs to the USGA. Attending national conferences, such as the GHIN Users Meeting (GUM) and International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA) are part of this representation.

TGA Foundation

The TGA Foundation, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, was established by the Association to make certain that golf in Texas continues to grow and prosper by ensuring that deserving young people, from every walk-of-life, have the opportunity to be exposed to this great game and the accompanying valuable life lessons to be learned.

In addition to the Legends Junior Tour, another way the Foundation reaches out to a new generation is through the Bill Penn Grant.

The Bill Penn Grant helps to financially support established community outreach programs such as the World Golf Foundation’s The First Tee and the Northern Texas PGA’s Golf-In-Schools program.

Currently, there are 10 First Tee chapters all across Texas, with several more in developmental stages. Together with Golf-In-Schools, the First Tee reaches thousands of kids on the local level, providing instruction, educational material and, of course, encouragement.

Another grass-roots junior development campaign, initiated by the Foundation, is the TGA Works program. This program is designed to provide youths with meaningful employment at a designated golf club or facility. By working along side positive role models like golf professionals, superintendents and club managers, young people will develop important personal qualities such as honesty, respect, and self-esteem that will serve them well in life.

Additionally, not only will they have a chance to play golf, but will also learn about the many potential career choices the game provides. To find out more about how you can help grow the game in Texas, click on “SUPPORT” in the bar at the top of the page.

Women's Initiatives are also provided through the TGA Foundation.  The Winners' Program encourages participants to excel in the classroom and on the course.  The Texas Challenge is a statewide competition for participants in Winners' Program sites.  The 'Nez Muhleman / Doris Kallina Scholarship program provides $25,000 in financial aid over four year to one worth recipient.
