Dallas Junior Awarded $25,000 College Scholarship

DALLAS – Rakeshia Wines on Wednesday was awarded the 2015 Doris Kallina/’Nez Muhleman Scholarship, valued at $25,000 over a four-year period. Wines received $3,000 on Wednesday in a ceremony at the Texas Golf Association offices, with the remainder of the scholarship to be paid out over the next three years.
 
A June graduate from Lincoln High School in Dallas, Wines ranked seventh in her class with a 3.3 GPA. Raised by her mother Myeshia Morris, Wines plans to use the scholarship money to attend Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.
 
“This really means a lot to me,” Wines said. “Just knowing there were several other girls who could have received this scholarship, but they picked me; it’s very heart-warming. The scholarship will help me relax. I won’t have to worry about the money, so I can focus on my schoolwork.”
 
Relatively new to golf, she enjoyed a prolific high school experience. Class president and captain of the Lincoln Majorettes, Wines was a National Honor Society member three times. She spent two years as an intern at WFAA-TV and served as lead journalist for her school’s radio/TV cluster. She’s also the only LHS student to be named Outstanding Advocate in a mock trial by the Dallas Bar Association.
 
Wines’ principal Chanel Howard-Veazy cited of Wines’ initiative, independence and collaborative spirit when she said Wines “exemplifies excellent moral character and unparalleled work ethic.”
 
Wines was introduced to golf in 2014 through the Northern Texas PGA’s “Fairway to Success,” an annual scholarship program for deserving students based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community involvement and financial need. She said it didn’t take long for her to understand how golf helps teach lessons about integrity, honestly and focus.
 
“I would love to start a golf program that gets more students from my area involved,” Wines said. “Before the Fairway program, I didn’t have any knowledge about golf, but I was quite interested. It would be nice to have at least 50 percent of the students in my neighborhood playing golf, because it is a very interesting sport and I’ve learned a lot from it.”
 
Established in 2008, the WTGA Scholarship Program was created to provide financial assistance to support and encourage young women golfers who are seeking higher education.  The scholarship recipients shall exemplify academic proficiency and illustrate a connection to the game of golf.
 
The scholarship is named for Doris Kallina and ‘Nez Muhleman, two women who have given time and resources to promote women’s golf in Texas for many years. Both served as Past WTGA Presidents and have distinguished legacies with the USGA as volunteers, committee members and officials. Their contributions to the game of golf have benefitted countless women and girls. Their dedication, character and lifelong connection to golf are attributes that the WTGA Scholarship Program endeavors to encourage in the next generation of young women.
