Aaron Hickman Wins 2016 North Mid-Amateur by Three

Garland, TX – Aaron Hickman won the 2016 North Mid-Amateur by three over Rob Couture. Chris Wheeler rounds out the top three.

Aaron Hickman of Tyler battled through tough scoring conditions to fire a two-over-par, 74 to win his 2nd career North Mid-Amateur. His day didn’t feature nearly as many birdies as his first two day but enough to keep Rob Couture of Dallas in second place.

Rob however put the pressure on early when he shrunk Aaron’s lead to four in just three holes. Couture birdie the 341 yard par four, 1st and the 325 yard par four, 3rd. Hickman then bogey the fourth to bring his lead to three. However, Rob started on a tough stretch that saw him lose those three strokes he gained in just as many holes. Despite adding a birdie coming in, Couture trailed by five making the turn.

That margin didn’t last long when a two shot swing occurred on the 519 yard, par five, 10th. Couture was never able to get closer than that of the lead though. Aaron had steady play from that point on to capture his title. Aaron bogeyed two more holes coming in, however, when he did he followed them up with birdies right after.

For Hickman, it makes for his second North Mid-Amateur title, tying Colleyville’s Zach Atkinson. Rob Couture leads all with four titles of which he won in consecutive fashion from 2007 to 2010.

Finishing in solo third place was Addison’s Christopher Wheeler. Wheeler had an up and down day that eventually led him to card a one-over-par, 73 and even par for championship.

Couture didn’t go home without any hardware though, as the Dallas native took home the title of low Super Mid-Am. The Texas Golf Association recognizes the low Super Mid-Am (ages 40+) in the overall field. Finishing in a tie for second for Super Mid-Am race was Carrollton’s Rick Sulzer and Arlington’s John Bearrie.

The Texas Golf Association would like to thank the entire professional and maintenance staff of Firewheel Golf Park. The tournament was a great success and the course was in prime condition.
