Borow Goes Low in First Round of Texas Junior Amateur

HORSESHOE BAY – Jacob Borow of Lake Jackson has been building his confidence on the putting greens lately and today it showed. Borow took a two-shot-lead with a 6-under 66 in the opening round of the Texas Junior Amateur at Summit Rock Golf Course at the Horseshoe Bay Resort.

“It was just all about my putting today,” said the incoming high school junior. “I made every putt that I looked at.”
 
After starting out hot by making birdies on his first two holes, Borow went on to make 5 birdies on his front nine. He had a total of 7 birdies for the day.
 
Dallas’ Trip Carter, Rondarius Walters of Grand Prairie, and Austin’s Cole Sherwood are all tied for second at 4-under par. 
 
Grayson Blunt of Kingwood and San Antonio’s Shoichiro Kato are tied for fifth place at 3-under-par. There are a handful of players sitting tied for seventh at 1-under.
 
With temperatures reaching 109 degrees throughout the first round of the Texas Junior Amateur players weren’t just competing against each other, they were working to outlast the tremendously hot playing conditions. 
 
“I definitely had to focus on keeping my energy up throughout the round, so I made sure I was drinking a lot of water and eating later in the day,” said Sherwood.
 
For the Boys Division, the Texas Junior Amateur consists of 54-holes including a cut after 36 holes to the low 45 players and ties. The tournament is open to all residents of Texas with players earning an exemption through the Legends Junior Tour or Texas Junior Golf Alliance or by competing in one of 12 qualifiers for the championship. 
 
Horseshoe Bay Resort has hosted the Texas Junior Amateur eight times in the past nine years. This is the second year in a row that the Boys Division has played the Summit Rock Course.
 
Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Summit Rock Golf Course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature designed 18-hole layout. With many elevated tee boxes with breathtaking views as well as large, guarded greens many consider Summit Rock to be the Golden Bear’s best work. Nicklaus said each hole of Summit Rock is a “Signature Hole,” which is partly why the course has been recognized in Golfweek’s Top 100 Resort Courses in America.
