Foster, Campbell, Madden and Zhong Lead Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic

LAKEWAY – Dallas’s Matthew Foster and Richmond’s Eli Walker Campbell share the lead of the Boys 15-18 Division following round one of the 2022 Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic. They each carded an impressive 2-under-par 70. Jenna Madden of McKinney posted a 2-over-par 74 and leads the Girls 12-18 Division. Henry Zhong of Irving leads the Boys 14 & Under Division following an opening 3-over-par 75.

Division Leaders: Foster played a consistent round, carding just one bogey and three birdies on the day. After starting the round on the back nine, Foster finished his round with a string of eight pars. Campbell, who also started the round on the back nine, went out at even par with two birdies and two bogeys. He managed to avoid trouble on the back while carding two more birdies. Both Foster and Campbell sit at 2-under-par 70. In the Girls 12-18 Division, Madden battled throughout the round. Despite three bogeys and a double on the day, she remained poised and closed out the round with three birdies and one bogey over her last seven holes. Madden, who is the defending champion, leads the field by one with 18 holes to play. In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Zhong carded three birdies en route to the round one lead. He currently holds a narrow one stroke lead as he looks to hold off the field during Sunday’s final round.

In Contention: In the Boys 15-18 Division, Ben Delarosa of Dallas posted a 1-under-par 71. He sits one shot behind the leaders and is solo third. Three players are tied for fourth at even-par 72 heading into Sunday’s final round. In the Girls 12-18 Division, Sydney Givens of Austin is solo second, one off the lead, after carding a 3-over-par 75. Nirjara Gulhane of Cedar Park is in third with 4-over-par 76. In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Yi Wen Huang of Austin holds second place following a 4-over-par 76. Argyle’s Grant Baer and Austin’s Luciano Follmer are tied in third place at 5-over-par 75.

Course: Crystal Falls Golf Club is in the picturesque Hill Country with a peaceful atmosphere and abundant wildlife. With numerous penalty areas and steep elevation changes, this 6,654 yard golf course may be short, but it still poses a formidable challenge.

Tournament Format: The Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic is a 36-hole stroke play event for players with an active membership with the Texas Junior Golf Alliance. Players ages 12-18 are split into three different divisions: Boys 15-18, Girls 12-18 and Boys 14 & Under. The event is ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, Golfweek and has AJGA Performance Stars that will be handed out to the top finishers.
