South Holds 8 Point Lead Over North at Jackie Burke Cup

BROWNWOOD – The South Team holds a 16-8 lead after the first day of the Jackie Burke Cup Matches at The Hideout Golf Club & Resort. The South Team currently holds the Jackie Burke Cup, and can even the overall record against the North Team with a win this weekend.

The Jackie Burke Cup is a team match play event modeled after the Ryder Cup. Each team features 12 players as North Texas takes on South Texas. Each match is worth two points and the team with the most points after Sunday will win the cup.

The Hideout Golf Club & Resort is located in Brownwood, Texas and is hosting the Jackie Burke Cup Matches for the first time. The par-72 layout challenges the players as they must manage their way through the Hill Country terrain. The course joins a stellar list of clubs to have hosted the Jackie Burke Cup including Whispering Pines Golf Club, Champions Golf Club, Brookhollow Country Club, Spanish Oaks Golf Club, Miramont Golf Club, Escondido Golf and Lake Club and The Clubs at Houston Oaks.

The South Team jumped out to an early 8-4 lead after winning the morning session of Four-Ball Matches against the North Team. Reese Roberts and Aidan Dortch got the North Team on the board first with a 4&2 win over Ethan Dufresne and Mitchell Maier. Andrew Tucker and Matt Pawly secured the first points for the South Team with a 1 up victory over Lucas Latimer and Rhett O’Rear. Tucker sank a long birdie putt on 18 to give his team the victory. Austin Hofferkamp and Eli Walker Campbell won 3&1 against Connor Henry and Matthew Foster, while Trent Mierl and Grant Yerger won 2&1 against Brooks Harper and Luke Colton. Ryan Lee and Luciano Follmer handled Aiden Tiet and Jack Clancy with a 3&2 victory. After claiming the first points of the day, the North Team got back on the board in the morning session’s last match as Sidney Robertson and Adrienne Ahn bested Jiyu Han and Farah O’Keefe 3&1.

The South Team rode their momentum into the Afternoon session, picking up 4 of the 6 Foursomes Matches. Ethan Dufresne and Andrew Tucker got things started with a 3 & 2 victory over Reese Roberts and Aidan Dortch. Mitchell Maier and Austin Hofferkamp followed suit and took care of Rhett O’Rear and Lucas Latimer with a 2&1 victory. Matt Pawly and Eli Walker Campbell also secured another 2 points for the South Team with a 2&1 victory over Brooks Harper and Luke Colton. Trenton Mierl and Grant Yerger finished off a captivating match against Connor Henry and Matthew Foster with a 2 up victory. Aiden Tiet and Jack Clancy stopped the bleeding for the North Team with a 1 up victory over Ryan Lee and Luciano Follmer. Sidney Robertson and Adrienne Ahn completed the sweep against Farah O’Keefe and Jiyu Han with a 1 up victory to close out the afternoon session.

Temperatures started in the 30s on Saturday, but the sun eventually came out and the winds stayed steady around five miles per hour.

The Final Round of the Jackie Burke Cup is Singles Matches with tee times starting at 7:30 am. Following the conclusion of the Final Round, the cup will be awarded to the winning team or the South Team if there is a tie.

The South Team currently holds the cup, after their 37-11 victory over the North Team at Willow Brook Country Club last fall. The North Team currently holds the edge in the overall record at 9-8.
