Megan Tang Leads Women’s Stroke Play Championship

GRANBURY – Fort Worth’s Megan Tang fired a 2-under 70 in Saturday’s second round of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship to take a two-shot lead at Harbor Lakes Golf Club. The senior at the University of Illinois Chicago enters the final round of the TGA women’s major with seven birdies and five bogeys through 36 holes.

“Today was a grind,” Tang said immediately following her round on Saturday. “I kind of just stayed in the moment and made sure I stayed aggressive.”

Tang’s bogey on the par-3 fourth hole was the turning point in her round. “My first bogey really kickstarted me to make more birdies. That was definitely the turning point.”

The Fort Worth native plans to keep the same gameplan heading into Sunday’s final round as a solid contingent of accomplished players are on her heels.

Included in the pack chasing Tang is a trio of players tied for second at even-par and two back of the lead. McKinney’s Shyla Brown, Martins Mill’s Mia Nixon, and Alise Knudson of Dallas are all looking to claim their first TGA major championship.

Nixon, a rising sophomore at Texas A&M, fired the low round of the tournament on Saturday with a 3-under 69.

“I think focusing on hitting the fairways was a big thing for me,” Nixon said of her recipe for success. “I grew up in Texas and it’s pretty windy so being able to keep the ball low and get it on the green is helpful.”

Defending champion Camryn Carreon took advantage of moving day by carding a 2-under 70 and moving up five spots on the leaderboard. The San Antonio native is three shots back of the lead at 1-over for the championship and will look to defend her title in Sunday’s final round.

Three players sit in a tie for sixth at 3-over total including round one leader Avery Blake of The Woodlands, Montgomery’s Remington Isaac, and Arlington’s Madison Le.

In Saturday’s second round Harbor Lakes’ front nine played to a 38.31 strokes average while the back nine played to a 38.60 strokes average.

Saturday’s total yardage for the Championship flight was 5,856 yards.

This is the fourth TGA championship to be held at Harbor Lakes. The club previously hosted the 2006 and 2012 Women’s Senior Stroke Play and the 2022 North Texas Regional Amateur.

Located approximately 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Harbor Lakes Golf Club opened in 2003 and was designed by Dick Phelps. The par-72 layout, which will play approximately 6,300 yards during the championship, is routed through a varied landscape of rolling hills, hardwood trees, and open meadows. With many fairways and greens guarded by penalty areas, bunkers, and run-off areas, the course presents an exacting challenge to even the most accomplished players.

The 9th Women’s Stroke Play is being contested over 54 holes of individual stroke play. 60 players are competing in the Championship Flight. The remaining 11 players are competing in the Flights Division.

D’Lynn McCoppin leads the Flights Division by seven shots at 3-over total after rounds of 74-73.
