Tang Claims Victory at Women’s Stroke Play Championship

GRANBURY – Fort Worth’s Megan Tang won the 9th Women’s Stroke Play Championship on Sunday in a three-way playoff at Harbor Lakes Golf Club. The University of Illinois Chicago senior carded an even-par round of 72 to finish at 2-under 214 for the tournament. She defeated defending champion Camryn Carreon of San Antonio and Mia Nixon of Martins Mill on the first playoff hole by making par.

“I haven’t really absorbed it yet,” Tang said of her emotions following the win. “I’m just so happy. It was a really great tournament. It was really fun, and it was an honor playing with all of these strong girls.”

Tang, who was an accomplished player in the Tennessee Golf Association’s junior tour growing up, recently moved to Texas last year. She understands the magnitude of winning one of the biggest women’s amateur golf events in Texas.

“It means a lot to me,” Tang said. “I know Texas has a lot of strong girls so it really motivates me to play golf and know that I can be just as good as these girls and one of the best.”

Tang credited staying present to her impressive play this week.

“I think it was not getting too into the future or in the past,” Tang said of her keys to success. “I kept bogeys in the past and didn’t think too much about holes to come.”

Defending champion Camryn Carreon put together a valiant effort in defending her title but came up just short. Carreon fired a final round 3-under 69 to get herself in the playoff.

Texas A&M sophomore Mia Nixon came in scorching hot to force the three-way playoff. She made birdie on her last three holes to card a final round 2-under 70.

McKinney’s Shyla Brown took fourth place after a final round of 2-over 74 to finish at 2-over 218 total for the tournament. There was a four-way tie for fifth to round out the top five. Katy’s Elina Sinz, San Antonio’s Jordan Salisbury, Avery Blake of The Woodlands, and Dallas’ Alise Knudson all finished at 3-over 219 total.

The field scoring average for the week at Harbor Lakes Golf Club was 76.88. The par-3 fifteenth hole played toughest for the championship at a 3.52 stroke average.

Sunday’s total yardage for the Championship flight was 6,233 yards.

This was the fourth TGA championship to be held at Harbor Lakes. The club previously hosted the 2006 and 2012 Women’s Senior Stroke Play and the 2022 North Texas Regional Amateur.

Located approximately 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Harbor Lakes Golf Club opened in 2003 and was designed by Dick Phelps. The par-72 layout, played approximately 6,300 yards during the championship, is routed through a varied landscape of rolling hills, hardwood trees, and open meadows. With many fairways and greens guarded by penalty areas, bunkers, and run-off areas, the course presents an exacting challenge to even the most accomplished players.

The 9th Women’s Stroke Play was contested over 54 holes of individual stroke play. 60 players were competing in the Championship Flight. The remaining 11 players competed in the Flights Division.

Denton’s Susannah Thomas earned Low Mid-Amateur honors after firing the low round of the tournament on Sunday with a 5-under 67. Corinth’s D’Lynn McCoppin won the Flights Division by seven shots at 8-over total after rounds of 74-73-77—224.

Camryn Carreon was awarded her 2022 Player of the Year trophy at the conclusion of the championship.
