Powers, Weibel and Pedigo Win the Spring Preview

HOUSTON—Brendan Powers, Hudson Weibel and Kennedy Pedigo fight of scattered rain showers in the final round to win their respective division at the Spring Preview at BlackHorse Golf Club.

After a two and a half hour weather delay to start Sunday’s, players started their second rounds of the 36-hole event.
Powers fired a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday to win by two strokes over Katy’s Jared Bray in the 12th annual event. The Mansfield native made three birdies in his final 18 holes, including his first hole and the 348-yard 16th. With the win, Powers secures the second LJT victory of his career, adding to the 2015 Texas Cup Invitational.

Bray posted rounds of 74-72 to get to 2-over 146 overall for the event. He went out in 4-under on Sunday and added another birdie on No. 10, the 392-yard par 4. Austin’s Cole Sherwood, who won the Boys 14 & Under Division at last year’s Spring Preview finished third with an overall score of 3-over 147.

There was a four-way tie between Jackson Taff, William Paysse, Dawson Ovard and Turner Hosch for fourth place at 4-over 148. Hosch won the Boys 15-18 Division of the 2016 Spring Preview. Luke Dossey and Brandon Hoff both tied for eighth, while Christian Hansen, Matthew Riedel and Edward Lee tied for 10th.

Dallas’ Weibel won the Boys 14 & Under Division and picked up his second victory in the division this year. Weibel’s two-day total of 147 was good enough for a one-stroke victory over Sugarland’s Shaheen Momin. Weibel won the Winter Classic at Dallas Athletic Club earlier this year.

In third place was Prayaag Oruganti from Austin, who fired rounds of 79-76 to finish at 155 overall. Houston’s Carson Ezell finished fourth at 157 overall, while Braeden Hoyt of Houston and Minas Manias of Frisco finished tied for fifth at 158 overall.

Pedigo picked up her first win on the Legends Junior Tour after her wire-to-wire victory at BlackHorse Golf Club. The Fort
Worth-native shot rounds of 69-73 to get to 2-under 142 overall and six strokes ahead of the field. Coming off a runner-up finish at the James A. Ragan Memorial in February, Pedigo made three birdies in her final round, including the par-5 ninth.

Cedar Park’s Calynne Rosholt finished runner-up in the Girls 12-18 Division with an overall score of 4-over 148. Rosholt shot 1-over 73 on Sunday to jump into second. Plano’s Melena Barrientos finished third at 6-over, while Dallas’ Hailey Jones finished fourth and Farmers Branch’s Julia Gregg finished fifth.

BlackHorse Golf Club has hosted the Spring Preview the last four years and the South Course has been a good test for Legends Junior Tour players. The course stretched out to 6,899 yards in the Boys 15-18 Division, 6,206 yards in the Boys 14 & Under Division and 5,806 yards in the Girls 12-18 Division.

The top three finishers in the Boys 15-18 Division earned an exemption into the Byron Nelson Junior Championship, the Texas State Junior Championship, the George Hannon Junior Invitational and the Texas Cup Invitational. The top three Girls 12-18 finishers earned spots into the Texas Girls Invitational.

The Collegiate Preview is up next on the Legends Junior Tour schedule. The event returns to Ridgewood Country Club in Waco on March 13-14 after spending the last two years at Hurricane Creek Country Club. The Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic is scheduled for 36 holes on March 16-17 at Lakecliff Golf Club.
