David Lee Claims Early Lead in 106th Texas Amateur Championship

DALLAS – Houston’s David Lee set the pace in the morning wave at Bent Tree Country Club with a 6-under-par 65.  “I feel like this was a round waiting to happen for me,” Lee said, adding that he hit a lot of solid shots and his putting was “fantastic.”

Lee has a two-stroke advantage over Grant Bennett from Lewisville, with the afternoon tee-times just now underway. Bennett, who started his round on No. 10, made the turn at even-par, but caught fire on the front nine with four birdies, including a chip-in on No. 7 (his 16th hole).

One shot behind Bennett is Austin’s Matthew Perrine at 3-under 68.

Scott Fawcett of Dallas, who posted a 2-under 69, has the shot of the day so far. After making what he termed a “sloppy bogey” on No. 11, Fawcett decided to “just fire right at the pin” from 109-yards out on No. 12. The strategy paid off handsomely, as he holed it for an eagle 2 on the 404-yard, par 4. Fawcett is tied for fourth place with Frank Paul and Sean Walsh.
Play continues this afternoon with players teeing off on both #1 and #10 through 2:20.  For pairings and live scoring, please click here.
