TGA Texas Two-Step Coming Soon

A new Texas Golf Association casual team competition is coming this fall, one with a creative twist that is welcoming to golfers of all levels of ability.

The Texas Two-Step is set to debut Nov. 10-12 at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, as part of the TGA’s popular Fun Golf Series. The new event is a retooling of the old Texas Stableford Handicap tournament to make it more accessible to a wider range of players who want to experience the excitement of playing in a good-natured competition in a relaxed environment.

Many of the same features that made the Texas Stableford so appealing are incorporated in the Texas Two-Step, including playing with a partner, using handicap indexes and flight divisions, host venue, and overall laid-back atmosphere. What has changed is how the tournament is conducted. Instead of using a Modified Stableford scoring system, the Texas Two-Step will feature styles of play that are more familiar and inclusive.

“We wanted to provide another opportunity for TGA members to get together on a great course to compete and have a good time,” said Brian Fry, TGA Foundation/Outreach Manager. “We believe the Texas Two-Step fits the bill perfectly and will be a unique and rewarding tournament experience for the players.”

The Texas Two-Step is open to all TGA members with an up-to-date WHS Handicap Index® and will have gross and net flight divisions for men’s, women’s and mixed teams. The creative twist to the new 36-hole, two-person team competition is its novel format, which will feature two different tournaments in one. On Day 1, teams will play 18 holes of best ball, then on Day 2 the format switches to an 18-hole scramble. Prizes will be awarded on both days to the lowest team scores in each division after the conclusion of play.

In a two-person best ball, each player on the team plays his or her own golf ball throughout the hole and the team uses the lowest score on the hole. In a two-person scramble, each player on the team hits a tee shot, selects the one in the better position, then both players hit their second shots from that spot. The better of the second shots is determined, and then both play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed. The scramble format allows for each player on a team to contribute good shots and putts while minimizing an individual’s poor shots.

“These two different formats are among the most fun and entertaining ways to play a team event and will provide an enjoyable outing for everyone involved,” Fry said. “I’m really looking forward to being a part of the first Texas Two-Step ever and I know that Riverhill Country Club will be an ideal host site for the event and will roll out the red carpet for the players.”

Designed by World Golf Hall of Fame member Byron Nelson and Joe Finger, Riverhill opened for play in 1974. Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, the par-72 course offers beautiful scenery and atmosphere as it winds its way through rolling terrain, groves of centuries-old trees, and natural water features. With numerous combination tees and yardages, Riverhill is the perfect setting for a memorable test of golf for players of all ages and abilities.

Registration for the Texas Two-Step will open at 9 a.m. on Sept. 1. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to join the TGA this fall for a casual weekend getaway filled with competition and camaraderie at wonderful Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville. Sign Up for #GivingTuesday Play Days and Support the TGA Foundation

GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea of designating a day of the year that encourages people to do good. Since then, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people each year to donate to nonprofits and charities all over the world.

GivingTuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year, falling on Nov. 29 for 2022. To celebrate this day of kindness, the TGA Foundation has a trio of events lined up to rally the state’s golf community in support of the Foundation’s mission to provide worthy young boys and girls in Texas with life-changing opportunities through the game of golf.

On Nov. 29, the TGA Foundation will be staging three #GivingTuesday presented by Dream Golf Play Days at Buffalo Creek Golf Club in Rockwall, April Sound Country Club in Montgomery, and Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio. These three unique courses are sure to provide a delightful combination of variety, challenge, and pure joy for everyone who steps onto the tee.

The #GivingTuesday Play Days on Nov. 29 are open to everyone who has a passion for golf and are inspired to help current and future generations benefit from the positive impacts and inherent values the game provides. The format for all three events is a two-person scramble with prizes awarded in gross and net divisions. Participation in the good-natured competition is not required and turning in a scorecard is optional for those who simply want to enjoy a relaxing day on the course.

All proceeds from the #GivingTuesday Play Days will be used to fund the Foundation’s array of junior golf development programs and initiatives both on and off the course, including access to affordable rounds of golf for $5 or less with Youth on Course, paid high school internships through the Bill Penn Program, college scholarships, and much more.

Signing up for a #GivingTuesday Play Day is quick, easy, and can make a huge impact on the TGA Foundation’s mission. PGA TOUR Superstore to Sponsor TGA’s Fun Golf Series

The Texas Golf Association is excited to announce PGA TOUR Superstore will be the presenting sponsor of its annual Fun Golf Series for the 2021 season.

Texas is home to a great many passionate golfers who like to play the game for recreation and sheer enjoyment. That’s why the TGA in 2015 established the Fun Golf Series as a way to increase playing opportunities for its members who are looking for a relaxing day on the course with family and friends.

Thousands of TGA Members and their guests – men and women golfers of all ages and handicap ranges – have jumped in over the past six years to participate in these casual, one-day outings that celebrate the recreational aspect of the game. For many, it’s exactly what they’ve been looking for, a chance to enjoy being outdoors with like-minded people, playing new and exciting courses – oftentimes private clubs – at a discounted fee.

Some of the state’s premier courses have hosted Fun Golf events, including both the Oaks and Canyons Courses at TPC San Antonio, Shady Valley Country Club, Crown Colony Country Club, Walden on Lake Conroe, Lantana Golf Club, The Rawls Course and Bentwater Yacht & Country Club to name a few.

Each Fun Golf Series event features an optional, low-key tournament to sign up for with inclusive formats suitable for every type of golfer. Players are flighted based on gender and handicap, with prizes awarded in gross and net divisions. Participation in the competition is never mandatory and neither is turning in a scorecard. Anyone who signs up for Fun Golf event is welcome to come out and just enjoy playing a relaxing round on a great course.

“The TGA is really excited about having our first Fun Golf presenting sponsor,” said Kelly Kilgo, the TGA’s Director of Outreach. “Our Fun Golf Series started with just a couple of events each year in the beginning, and now we host 30 events annually all over the state. Fun Golf caters to men and women of all ages and skill levels and is a perfect atmosphere for golfers who simply love to play new courses with good people. Through the Fun Golf Series, PGA TOUR Superstore will be able to connect with thousands of recreational golfers across Texas.”

PGA TOUR Superstore is Texas’ leading golf experiential specialty retailer. PGA TOUR Superstore offers guests the largest variety of apparel for men, women and juniors, in addition to a wide assortment of clubs, accessories and footwear. Inside PGA TOUR Superstore, expansive putting greens, simulators and practice bays are available for customers’ use.

As part of the Company’s core values, they are committed to giving back to others, being a positive influence in the communities they operate and growing the game for all.

Currently, PGA TOUR Superstore operates six stores across the state of Texas and will look to continue to expand its presence in golf-centric markets across the state. The Company recently announced plans to open three additional stores in Texas in later this year including, Arlington, San Antonio and a third store in the Houston-area.

Introducing TGA Tee Time Series

As part of the TGA’s expanded Fun Golf Initiative, we’re excited to announce the launch of “TGA Tee Time Series.” This program will bring even more opportunities for TGA Members to play casual rounds of golf on new courses for discounted green fees.

Much like our Fun Golf Play Days and Play 9 events, the idea behind TGA Tee Time outings is to give our members more and new places to play recreational golf.

TGA Members must register online at txga.org in advance to play in TGA Tee Time outings. Walk-ups on the day of the outing are not permitted. The discounted rates will include cart fees, and participants check in with the pro shop as they would for a normal round of golf.

The first TGA Tee Time opportunity is March 2 at Rayburn Country Resort in East Texas. There are available tee times from 10:52 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. for $40.

For a full schedule of TGA Tee Time outings in your area, click here. For more information, click here.
