Bluebonnet Championship Set for May 6-7

BROWNWOOD – The Legends Junior Tour continues its tradition of hosting the annual Bluebonnet Championship with the 22nd playing of the event this year.

“Brownwood Country Club is year in and year out a fantastic host for this event and our players,” Legends Junior Tour Tournament Manager Adam Schulte said. “This has always been one of the most competitive and fun events each year and the LJT is thrilled to continue hosting the best juniors in the state in Brownwood.”

The Bluebonnet Championship was started by local businessman Bart Johnson in 2002 and has been played at Brownwood Country Club since its inception. The par-72 course was designed by Leon Howard and opened in 1929. It features bentgrass greens and wide fairways that give players ample opportunities for low scores. It also showcases many scenic views on hilltops throughout the course. The 36-hole championship features three separate divisions: Boys 15-18, Girls 12-18 and Boys 14 & Under.

Last year, Fort Worth’s Connor Henry carded rounds of 67-64 to post 13-under-par 131 to win the Boys 15-18 Division title by six strokes over Austin’s Grant Yerger. In the Girls 12-18 Division, Farah O’Keefe of Austin claimed victory by five strokes with rounds of 68-68.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Dallas’ Jack Clancy defeated Southlake’s Andrea Birolini in a playoff to secure the win. Clancy won with a par on the first playoff hole.

Henry, O’Keefe, and Clancy are just a few of the decorated past champions of this prestigious junior championship. The impressive list of past Bluebonnet Championship winners includes World No. 2 and Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler. That is elite company for the winners of this event.

Joining Scheffler among the list of notable past champions include the likes of 2019 Texas Amateur champion Ryan Grider, USA Walker Cup Team Member Pierceson Coody, Cooper Dossey and former Texas Junior Amateur champions Stratton Nolen and Hailee Cooper.

This championship is ranked by both Junior Golf Scoreboard and Golfweek. Competitors who finish in the top half of the field will gain points towards the LJT Player of the Year Standings.

Along with rankings on the Legends Junior Tour, the top finishers in each division will earn AJGA stars based on their finishes.
